Unfortunatly I failed with my first springtail culture. I didn't open it up daily and the co2 built up and they died (at least this is what I think happened)
My question is can I pull some substrate from my viv and start a new culture? If so what is the best way to do this?
Unfortunatley I can't just order a new culture right now.
Maybe you can start a new culture with what was left in the last one, probably eggs in there. Just put some holes in the top of the plastic container you were keeping them in. The cheap square ziplock containers work fine just make some slits in the top and keep the substrate moist. Try feeding them mushrooms. Not sure what variety you have, mine are "tropical" so need ambient temps.
Try what Beth said and if nothing just taking some from the tank will be fine. I have leaf litter in my tanks so if I need to transfer springs I just grab some leaves and throw them into another tank. Of course if you are moving things between tanks make sure your frogs are "clean".
Im pretty new with springtail cultures as well this is what im doing, there is lots of mold for them to eat and seemingly lots of room for them to lay eggs and such. http://www.totallyterrariums.com/for...hp?topic=543.0
Someone on another forum suggested that I cut slits in the lid of my springtail culture that died and give it a few weeks. I looked at it yesterday and I have springtails again the eggs hatched and was not effected by the CO2 .
so FYI to those of you that may have a similar issue.
My lid doesnt sit on very tight so im sure there is adaquate air exchange mine has been going for two weeks and still hasnt really started to bloom, I have been away for a week so im sure my FF cultures and spring cultures should be starting to produce when i get home. How did you end up setting yours up?
I have been feeding mine fresh slices of mushrooms and they have been going crazy. Also, I culture mine in charcoal not coco fiber, not sure it makes a difference but im my case the charcoal cultures seem to take off more then the ones in the coco fiber cultures I have.
