Java moss can be like a weed. I have ripped off sheets of it from background that were matted and about 3" thick. I like lots of misting though and lights are bright in some spots so it tends to really take off...and if neglected for a few months it gets thick. Between Java moss and creaping fig, I sometimes throw out a full garbage bag of that stuff

Well I havn't been to long into the vivarium hobby (have done a couple of small glass terrariums, etc), but I found that the native mosses that grow all over the place here work very well. Practically free and beautiful too. Now granted, my tank isn't a tropical setup though... so it may not work with dart frogs, but for a native/temperate viv I found it worked well for me.
