Default Misting

In my (humble) opinion I think we overmist some of our vivs. I know some species prefer a 'wetter' environment - my whitefoots love high humidity and a wet viv. Other species such as my terribs I keep much drier with a single jet misting their tank early morning and late afternoon. Their viv is humid but the floor is pretty dry.
I run a drier period during the year to mirror their natural environment and cool down the breeding activity.

Using leaf litter as a rough indicator which species do you keep drier and which wetter.

Regards
Marcus

I agree Marcus.

We keep out Leucs on the drier side

Tincs in the middle

Auratus love water, so they get the most misting.

On average IME I think a lot of froggers mist to much. It can reach 90-95% humidity here frequently, yet the forest and trees aren't dripping with water. It's just humid. In the winter months we dry the tanks out pretty good to try and reduce breeding. All of our frogs have acess to water in case we cross the line.

Hmmm I'm probably the other end of the spectrum. I mist in the am before going to work and then when I get home at night. That's it. It's the same for my darts, mossy frogs, big eye trees, and geckos. Mind you all the frog tanks have sizable running water features with water falls, streams leading to ponds or palus so it's not like they ever get 'dry' per say. I suspect many over mist, I just do it the lazy mans way.

I pay for gallons of spring water so I give everything a good thorough spraying once a day, usually in the AM but could be later, all of my tanks dry out pretty well during the day. It has been many years since I cycled anything, I just let nature take it's course with breeding, though I have sold off all but egg feeders as taking care of tads was taking me through a case of spring water a week...not to mention the daily water changes i performed on the tads. I do think people over estimate the amount of misting they need to do, that is why I have always advocated full hoods or tops over tanks, with that 1 spraying a day is all that is necessary.

My summersi viv gets misted about once or twice a month. It's a cube with a full lid and it gets no airflow. Every time I lift the lid to feed, I can feel the rush of humid air. The plants really do a good job of providing that humidity. Misting would probably give me severe mold issues.

My 40B vert on the other hand, it gets misted heavily every day. It "dries out" pretty well bc it's heavily ventilated. I think as far as the plants go, this makes them very happy. The bromeliads couldn't be healthier. The leaf litter never gets too dry but the upper parts and background do. It can be hard to find a happy medium sometimes but it seems the heavy morning misting really works well.
