Yep it was by Pat Nabors and he wasn't particularly happy with the end product, since the magazine editors took a lot of the more specialized care information out of his original draft to dumb it down for their target audience.
It had some really nice pictures and I'd say all around decent information for someone not knowing anything about thumbnails. Very basic, but then again better than most of the stuff you find in that magazine ( I remember the article a few issues back on Crested Geckos and how you SHOULD feed them baby food and no mention of the specially formulated diets for Cresties - i.e. GCD- that are low in sugar and high in just about every other necessary nutrient!). All in all the magazine is not really aimed at the serious hobbyist, unfortunate, but indeed it must aim to please its "target" audience.
I am the only one here that misses the Vivarium mag that was published about 8-10 years ago?
Absolutely not!
I love those magazines...I have managed to keep a decent amount of them, the 2 volumedart frog special was fantastic! That publication really was ahead of its time and the photos were all breathtaking. What ever ended up happening to it?
Bow tie publications the people who publish "Reptiles" magazine bought them out. At one point we actually had 4 magazines in this country to choose from, and now we are stuck with one.. Kinda of sad when you think about it.

That is unfortunate.
I support Reptiles Magazine and subscribe to it , but as you state it is really because there is nothing else offered. Occasionally some of the bookstores around here carry some international herp publications such as Scales 'n' Tails which I think are quite good compared to Reptiles. It just seems that Reptiles magazine is simply a reskin of Bird Talk, Aquarium Fish, Cat Fancy, etc...just way too distilled for the mass "pet" market and not serious hobbyist and breeders. Mainly an avenue for companies to push their commercial products to new dabblers. Is Reptiles USA the same company? I've only browsed through a few pages of Reptiles USA on different occasions, needless to say it never sparked my interest.
I liked the article but it could definitely have been more in depth. Hopefully it would prompt people interested in darts to do more research and find out more info.
It would be awesome if we could eventually get the unedited article from Pat. I'd love to see what else he had to say about thumbs.

Reptiles USA is their annual mag. It is their annual magazine really dumbed down to capture the entry level hobbyist market.
