Well up until yesterday I had a proven trio of Guyana ventrimaculatus , and I decided to remove the sphagnum moss, add fresh leaf litter and tidy up a bit.
and when I was done I couldn't find one of the females and I was real careful removing the moss, and even sifted through it about twenty times just to make sure, didn't do and inventory before the clean up but I always see all of them everyday, and I searched my frog room about 100 times all last night and today also, and nothing. Now just a little while ago I removed all the leaf litter to check again and now I can't find my male. again I was careful but I can't figure out where he's hiding. does anybody know if vents have the ability to bury themselves in the substrate? The viv has a complete glass top and it would be impossible for them to escape through the top, it's a 10 gal. viv.
any input would be greatly appreciated.
I bet they are still in there...Just to be safe I would go through everything you pulled out again. But thumbs can fit into extreamly small spots and deep down into brom axles.....I had the same situation with a pair of varadero....After pulling all the leaf litter and a couple broms they were in crevases in the cork bark background....Good luck man the feeling of one of your frogs might be missing sucks.
Thanks James, The male just showed up, so at lease I still have a pair, but the second female is still MIA , and yeah this morning I spread everything out on my empty garage floor and went through it strand by strand and nothing, but I"m going to do it again right now, just in case...... Thanks again
That happened to me with a young Retic froglet. Took everything out of the grow on container - no frog! Went through everything with a fine tooth comb so thought it had possibly died and being so small the macrofauna had made fast work of 'removing' any evidence. As I was due at a meeting I just stuffed everything back into the container to sort later when I had more time. Anyway returning the next morning what was looking bewildered from its trashed home one Retic froglet!
Like you I thought I had examined everything meticulously - obviously not!
Hopefully it will appear after its game of 'hide and seek'
IMO the best way to pull them out of hiding is to put a bunch of springs in the middle of the viv give it Some time, step away from the viv and check them later.
I do not have vents but this has worked with my pums.
Up date: sorry guys been real busy lately, She showed up about 3 days ago, where she was, I don't have a clue, but I'm very happy she was still in the viv and looks like she didn't miss a meal either thanks to all for your kindness and advise.
