Hello,
I am getting ready to do a rebuild on my Phylobates Terribilis tank and before I got started I wanted to find out if anyone here has ever done a bisected tank. This would be done for the purpose of keeping two species in one tank but would stop them from ever coming in direct contact. I know the two species in one tank is always a hot/frowned up topic. My design would ultimately have a large piece of glass coming down the middle of the tank width wise essentially breaking it in two, similiar to the way that some aquariums in the pet store can keep two kinds of fish in the same tank that normally should not be together. I would be using one of the larger/longer exo terra's for this. I don't know if I have seen a design like this and was curious if bisecting the tank and keeping the two kinds of frogs from coming into contact would alleviate the concerns normally associated with a mult species tank.
Thoughts and feedback would be appreciated as if this is not a good idea I would not want to do it.
I've seen tanks where people have divided them, but I often wondered why not just get two tanks. It would seem easier to me then going through the hassle of dividing them.
Much safer than having two species share the same envirionment (a sheet of glass would not stop pathogens etc passing through the drainage layers unless you were going to take the glass all the way to the bottom and end up with two seperate sealed environments)and the terribs will still have the space they had before. My group use all their space floor and vertical through branches. Some people say their terribs don't climb when adult - mine do.
Thank you. Beth what was the purpose of your division and how did it work out. Did you divide the tank all the way through the substrate and did you keep more than one species?
I sold the frogs that were in my existing Exo and rebuilt it by dividing it into 2 sections after sterilizing it.
I bought a piece of glass that went all the way from the top to the bottom of the viv, siliconed and GS it to hold the glass and seal it. I kept 1.1 Almirantes in one side and 1.1 Mancreeks in the other.
I do think that the pums pairs do better in a 18x18x24, a while back I redid the Exo again, removed the partition and have a trio of blue jeans in it.
Thank you all for the responses. I was considering a way to increase/diversify my collection without adding a second tank, my wife does not want more than one in the house and I was tyring to game the system : - ) I may end up doing the rebuild and just do a super mint terribilis tank as the bisecting could be a hassle.
Tell ya what, Everytime you get a new tank she gets a new (What ever she likes)
The trick is building the first one with your spouse. Mine is hooked. Went to petco the other day.. got in the car and she said one thing to me "you are not buying another tank today" and guess what we came home with? A 40 Breeder. haha YES!
