K, I know it's hard to diagnose a frog that's bloating, but I'm going to give this a try.
Just found'em like this on my morning rounds.
Bloated, holding it's self lower to the ground, lethargic...the bloating looks a little high in the body when you look at the underside, almost closer up to the throat. Which still looks like its moving in and out ok...thought I saw what almost looked like it was dry heaving. I'll have to watch more to see, I came straight down here after I found'em.
I've moved'em to a hospital tank for now, and to avoid any shock I did a quick spurt of calcium water.
This seems rather sudden, I'm wondering if it ate something large....
Since moving'em to the hospital tank it appears to be sitting up a little more, but you can still clearly see from the side shot the bump that's almost in the chest area...
Thought I'd post this in hopes of it helping.
I really apologize for the sideways video. All I have is a smartphone with a camera and the angle I have to hold at to get it level leaves me touching the touch screen and screwing up the video.
Is this an overnight or over a few days thing?
Reason I ask is I have some female auratus that have looked like that when breeding.
I have attached a picture from 3 years ago of one of my females when she was laying.
I still have her, she is not as big now but doing well.
Hey Beth,
I've had it for about 7 months. It was a juvenile when I got it.
To be absolutely honest. It very well might have started yesterday. I was pretty busy, and other than making my morning rounds yesterday, didn't have a chance to peak in through the day. I did see it out and about, but it was in the far back corner in a frequent hang out spot so I never took a good look. I've been sitting here all day trying to think if I had noticed anything or not...
I have to admit though, hearing that about your frog makes me feel a little better for sure. As the day progressed, every time I poked my head in to check on mine, it was in a new spot, and sitting upright better. No major change in appearance though.
Looking at your picture though...that's one big girl. My fingers are crossed that this is what the case is.....that'd help me answer on if it was a male or female
From what I have read bloat can be caused by a number of things.
I would just make sure there is not any odd behavior and the frog is eating fine.
If anything changes you should e-mail Dr. Frye.
Looks a little bigger today. The 'dry heaving' I wouldn't say looks like dry heaving, more like a gasp. Not sure if it's eating. I think it might've been yesterday, but not sure if it was the gasp I was seeing and mistaking as possibly eating. I only noticed it a few times yesterday, it appears to be doing it more often today. After tucking it's self away last night for the night, I did find it out and about this morning.
Thought I'd try my hand at a better video today, and think I got something that shows the situation a little better. You'll notice in the video that after I give a little nudge to the bum it does the gasp I'm speaking of. there are a few other examples but they all happen at the same time I move the camera so they're not 100% clear.
Thank you very much Beth, I just may have to end up sending him a msg. would the best way just be to msg him though the boards here?
I decided to post the video to youtube instead as photobucket was decreasing the resolution. This is a much better video than yesterday.
