How does the male fertilize the eggs? I have a clutch of eggs in the film canister, they are below the water line, in fact they are at the bottom of the film canister, does he fertilize as the eggs are laid?

The male will fertilize the eggs as or after they are laid. People have told me to leave the eggs for a couple days as the male will come back and fertilize them numerous times. I have also heard that sometimes the male fertilizes the canister and the female lays the eggs where he has already done his job.
