I was making my own media, but thought I would give this stuff a try. I'm very impressed with the production and it's easy. I'm doing 3 tablespoons to just a hair under a (Canadian) half cup of water. Yes, a Canadian half cup is different than an American half cup.
An added bonus is I've never got the dreaded culture slide.
I find they produce longer than most because they seem to retain the water better and don't dry out. Yes, they have an odour after about 3 weeks. I don't find it that bad.
Nice ingredients, but I'm not crazy about the mold inhibitors and preservatives, esp parabens...I'm allergic and my skin peels if I cone in contact with it.
Here ya go Glenn:
8 cups Potato Flakes
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 - 3/4 cup brewers yeast
3-4 tsp. methyl parabon
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. paprika
Mix equal parts media/water - I tend to add more water in the winter
I do not use a bowl to mix it, use a large ziplock instead (just close and shake to mix). I keep it in my fridge until ready to culture then add RO water.
Wierd that you are allergic to the mold inhibitors Marty.....

We have found when making cultures with our media that mixing isn't all that necessary as long as you use boiling water and pour it into the media in a way most of it gets wet. Leaving part of the media "dry" allows the top of the media to stay moist until it starts going (i.e. getting more runny) and then the dry part soaks it up. We can't have runny cultures since we ship out our cultures and have found this method to work really well. In addition, at over 1100 cultures a week, not mixing saves a lot of time.
So, beth, try making a couple with out mixing the water and media. Saves a little bit of time and we have found it actually beneficial.
