I've got a small amount of flies in my older cultures and would like to set up some new ones. I'm using the Carolina mix and had read that some people use vinegar to keep mites out of the cultures (as well as mold but have no problem with mold). Just curious if anybody adds vinegar to their medium for mites and if it could be put in the Carolina Bio. mix. Shouldn't hurt the frogs?
I dont see why it would hurt the frogs. I personally use the methyl-paroben to help fight the fungus along with another anti fungal agent. As far as the MITES go, you just have to stay on top of the flies themselves. wipe down all the areas you set them on periodically with alcohol to kill any bacteria and if you can set them on mite paper as well.
I have used 50/50 water/vinegar in my cultures for years but I don't think it has any impact on mites. I always dump the culture at around a month to keep the mites (if any) to a minimum. I also store all my cultures on mite paper which is very effective.
