As far as having a separate culture of springs, I like to keep them in larger containers than what they come in. If you have the room what I did was take a beat up old 10 gallon aquarium and glass lid, put about 2" of hydroton in with about an inch of water. I feed the springs whenever I remember and they multiply like crazy in there. Whenever I need some I just lean the tank over a little and scoop up large amounts of them from the water. Works great.
